              TRAINING OF PALEONTOLOGICAL VOLUNTEERS
              1996 GENERAL SESSION
              STATE OF UTAH

          AN ACT RELATING TO THE UTAH GEOLOGICAL SURVEY; DIRECTING THE UTAH
          GEOLOGICAL SURVEY TO DEVELOP A CURRICULUM AND MATERIALS FOR THE
          TRAINING OF VOLUNTEERS WHO ASSIST PALEONTOLOGISTS.
          This act affects sections of Utah Code Annotated 1953 as follows:
          AMENDS:
          63-73-20 , as enacted by Chapter 194, Laws of Utah 1995
          Be it enacted by the Legislature of the state of Utah:
              Section 1. Section 63-73-20 is amended to read:
              63-73-20. Curriculum and materials for the training of volunteers who assist
          paleontologists.
              (1) The survey shall develop a [paleontology certification program. (2) The program shall:
          (a) promote popular interest and education in paleontology; (b) sponsor and encourage the
          preservation of the paleontological resources of the state; (c) provide training to] curriculum and
          materials for the training of volunteers [to enable them to] who assist paleontologists[; and] in the
          field and laboratory.
              [(d) provide, when possible, opportunities for volunteers who complete the program to
          assist at paleontological sites.]
              [(3) An] (2) A qualified employee of the survey [who holds a master's or doctoral degree
          in paleontology] shall be appointed by the survey director to develop [a program] the curriculum
          and materials under this section.
              [(4)] (3) The survey [shall] may request input and assistance from any interested[,
          nonprofit] organization in developing [a program] the curriculum and materials.
              [(5)] (4) The survey may collect fees to cover the costs of [providing training,] the
          materials and updating of the curriculum[, and educational materials].
