Background

Types of committees: The Utah Legislative year is divided up into two periods, the General Session and the Interim. There is a similar but different set of committees for each of these two periods. The General Session starts the 3rd Monday in January and ends at midnight exactly 45 calendar days later (in the first week of March.) The Interim is all the rest of the year. Interim meetings usually start in April and end in November.

During the session, Standing Committees consider bills that change Utah state statutes. Appropriations committees work on financial budget matters. During the Interim, Interim Committees (organized by topic reflecting the sessions's Standing Committees) study legislative topics and prepare legislation to be introduced in the next General Session.

(The activities of Legislative Committees are governed by a set of Legislative Rules. These rules may help you understand the operation of the committees.)
