Thomas
BREWSTER

Will, 10 Dec 1755, Fairfax Co., VA
Inventory, 17 Feb 1756, Fairfax Co., VA

The Will, and Inventory of the Estate, of Thomas BREWSTER.

Transcribed by Robert Fillerup

[Note: Apparently the clerk who transcribed the will into the official county will book could not read the handwriting, and transcribed the name as Thomas Bruston. This is how it appears in the index (both in the original index and in the printed "Index to Fairfax County, Virginia Wills and Fiduciary Records, 1742-1855," Constance Ring, comp., Willow Bend Books, Lovettsville, Virginia, 1995.) However, the order at the bottom of the will allowing it to be entered for probate correctly states the name as BREWSTER. In addition, the inventory of the estate, (Will Book B, p.107) lists the name correctly as Thomas BREWSTER.]

[p.101] [In the] NAME of God amen, I Thomas Bruston of Camron Parish in the County of Fairfax being sick and weak of body but of sound mind and perfect memory thanks be to Almighty God and calling to remembrance the frailty and uncertainty of human life have made this my last will and testament in manner following. My Body I leave to be buried at the discretion of my Executors and [?? isice] hereafter [n]amed after my just debts are honestly paid
[At this point, the bottom of the original page has been cut or torn, somewhat in a wave pattern. It appears someone trimmed off portions that had been damaged. Missing portions, or portions deduced from what remains are indicated with brackets, thus [missing].]
[missing][looks like an ending "t" followed by ?mis] I leave and Bequ[eath to my] dear and beloved wife Mary Negro fello[w] [D? - probably Dick. There are 2-3 additional words missing on this line which probably were "and the Negro"] [Beginning of next line - a couple of letters missing - probably were [We]nch Rose and he... [several words missing- probably were "her increase. And I leave"] [a]nd Bequeath to my [S? - only the top of the letter appears - looks like it might be a capital "S" - missing rest of this line and possibly one more line at the bottom of the page.]
[p.102] GIRL Hannah and her increase forever: If my Daughter Mary dies without heir [then?] hannah and her increase to fall to my Daughter Anne[.] I give and Bequeath to my Daughter Anne Negro lusy [Lucy] and her increase forever[.] if Anne should die without heir [of] her body for lusy [Lucy] to fall to my Daughter Mary and her heirs forever. I leave and Bequeath to my Daughter Priscilla Negro Girl Prue and her increase forever. Inventory of the estate of Thomas Brewster.

[The inventory of the estate of Thomas Brewster is found in Book B, p. 107 of Fairfax Co., VA Wills.]

In Obedience to an Order of the Fairfax County Court bearing date the 17th of February 1756. We whose names are hereto subscribed being first sworn hath been & appraised the Estate of Thomas Brewster dec.d in Current money as followeth.

[Note: Preceding each listed item appears to be the word "To." Apparently this is an abbreviation for the word "Item." To make reading easier, I have italicized the word "To". The values of items are given in pounds "£"; shillings "s"; and pence "d." Sometimes these values are given as three numbers, separated by periods "3.15.0" Also appearing is a peculiar symbol that looks something like a modern ampersand, which apparently means "with." It has been transcribed as [with]. The word "Do" is transcribed as in the original, meaning "Ditto".][Conversion of values: One pound £1 = twenty shillings or 20s; One shilling, 1s, = 12 pence or 12d.]

[a column heading symbol of some sort appears here – the symbol for "with" appears first]
